Original 1st World Festival of Negro Arts (FESTAC) Dakar, Senegal Poster, 1966 by Ibou Diouf

This official vintage poster for the 1st World Festival of Negro Arts (Premier Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres) was designed in 1966 by Senegalese artist Ibou Diouf and printed in Paris by Jeanbin.  The First World Festival of Negro Arts was held in Dakar,Senegal in April 1966 and was a significant Pan-African event that brought together artists, performers, and intellectuals from across the African diaspora to celebrate Black artistry and culture, including Duke Ellington, Josephine Baker, and Langston Hughes.

Initiated by Léopold Sédar Senghor, then-President of Senegal, and directed Alioune Diop, the festival demonstrated the possibility of 'Négritude' by showcasing the richness and diversity of African culture and promote its role in economic and social development.
