The First World Festival of Negro Arts was held in Dakar,Senegal in April 1966. It was a significant Pan-African event that brought together artists, performers, and intellectuals from across the African diaspora to celebrate Black artistry and culture, including Duke Ellington, Josephine Baker, and Langston Hughes.
Initiated by Léopold Sédar Senghor, then-President of Senegal, the festival aimed to demonstrate 'Négritude' by showcasing the richness and diversity of African culture and promote its role in economic and social development.
