Original 1896 antique poster for explorer H. M. Stanley's upcoming article in Scribner's "Century" literary magazine's Midwinter February issue with a striking illustration featuring the visage of an African male and his sword emerging from foliage below a brilliant sun - in a warm palette of golden yellows and oranges - surrounded by a wintery scene of snow covered evergreens in a contrasting cool palette of blue and white. Some of the most impressive Art Nouveau posters were produced by The Century Company. They commissioned original graphics by masters such as Louis John Rhead, Eugene Grassett, Edward Penfield, and George Wharton Edwards. This poster includes the monogram HML to the bottom right.
