Air France Planisphere 'Nova Et Vetera', 1939, by Boucher (mid-size)

This original poster is one of many planispheres by Lucien Boucher and commissioned by Air France.  This edition is from 1939, titled “Nova et Vetera”, and blends art and cartography to celebrate both the past and future of air travel.  Boucher is known for his iconic map designs and this piece was produced at the onset of World War II, as air travel was rapidly evolving, and Air France was positioning itself as a global aviation leader.  “Nova et Vetera” translates from Latin as"New and Old," and the map captures the transition between the old world of sea-bound exploration and the new age of air travel. This juxtaposition is represented in the map’s composition which features routes stretching across continents to symbolise the vast reach of Air France’s network.  The highlighting of traditional and modern elements of travel emphasises Air France's innovation whilst still positioning this in the historical spirit of exploration.  Lucien Boucher was a master of integrating artistry with geography as is exemplfied in this relatively early poster from him. The planisphere is both decorative and informative, showcasing the globe and marking the flight paths that connected Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia, and beyond. With intricate details and imaginative design, Boucher captures the global vision of Air France, reflecting its ambition to connect the world.  This is the rare version of this planisphere with gold highlights accentuating the intricate cartography.
