This is an original vintage poster for FESTAC ’77 (The Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture), held in Lagso and Kaduna, Nigeria from January 15th to February 12th 1977. Festac was known to be the largest and most ambitious Pan-African celebration in world history, briging together over 16,000 participants from 56 nations and including popular figures such as Stevie Wonder, Sun Ra and Audre Lorde. The centrpiece of the poster features a stylized depiction of the famout 16th-century ivory pendant mask of the Queen Mother Idia, looted from Nigeria in 1897. As the British Museum refused to return the original mask to Nigeria for the festival, a precise replica was sculpted and translated into the graphic used on the poster.
