“Nigeria’s Exports – Gathering Palm Fruit”, 1927, by Gerald Spencer Pryse

An original 1927 British Empire Marketing Board (EMB) poster titled “Nigeria’s Exports – Gathering Palm Fruit”, representing a crucial era in both graphic design and 20^th century colonial trade history.  The illustration depticts a Nigerian labourer skillfully ascenting a palm tree to harvest fruit amid lush tropical foliage with the typography chronicling the economic growth of colonial Nigeria’s agricultural exports between 1901 and 1927, noting that “one half goes to the United Kingdom”.  This poster is highly sought after by museums and collectors of black history for its depiction of colonial propaganda and mid-century design.
