A rare Cold War Era East German Aviation Poster from 1968 promoting Interflug Airline’s African routes. Designed by the renowned East German artistic duo Eva and Gottfried Bormann (E.G. Bormann), this English-language version presents the intersection of mid-century modern graphic design and cold war history. Unlike modern digital reprints, this is a guaranteed authentic lithograph from the original year of production. The illustration features an avant-garde composition that beautifully captures the optimism of 1960s aviation with a beautifully patterned traditional African spear and shield inset with the sleek silhouette of modern city skyscrapers and a palm tree—symbolizing the bridge between ancient cultures and modern travel. Interflug was established in 1958 and served as the official national airline of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany/DDR) from 1963 until German reunification in 1990. Operating behind the Iron Curtain out of Berlin Schönefeld, their international flights to non-Socialist continents like Africa were heavily steeped in state prestige and diplomatic outreach.
