Republique De Cote d'Ivoire by Dessirier 1960

This poster was designed to celebrate and promote the newly independent nation of Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) around 1960.  The top three-quarters of the poster feature a powerful abstract composition of African elephants emerging from a dense jungle under handing liana vines, captured in a bold, mid-century color palette of deep forest greens, vibrant purples and stark blacks.  The lower portion of the poster features the modernist monument at the Place de la Republique in Abidjan, to symbolise the dawn of the new republic.  The poster marks a monumental moment in West African history, being printed as the new republic gained independence from France.  The avant-garde style captures the energy, pride and optimism for the new sovereign nation.
