Very rare Nigerian Breweries Ltd advertising poster Star Beer. Seeking to pioneer a domestic manufacturing sector, the United Africa Company (UAC) partnered with the Dutch brewing giant Heineken N.V. to establish Nigerian Breweries Limited in November 1946. After constructing a state-of-the-art facility in Iganmu, Lagos, the company made history in June 1949 by rolling out the very first bottle of Star Lager Beer—the country's first commercially mass-produced indigenous beer brand. Attempting to compete with imported beer brands, Star was marketed as a proudly local product of comparable quality, becoming a symbol of Nigeria’s pre-independence modernisation and manufacturing capacity. The logo of “Ah, Star – beer at its best” is typical of Nigerian Breweries’ early marketing of Star beer in the late 1940s and 1950s.
